St. George’s Community Theatre

Mission Statement

Our mission is to teach and learn about Christ through the arts. By building a team of cast and crew members, we will build a closer community and friendships at St. George’s Anglican Church. Adults and children will have the opportunity to lead and minister to the Colorado Springs community through by pronouncing a message of Christ’s teachings through theatre.

Barbara Robinson’s play, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is the perfect example of a story that gives a message of Christ’s teachings. It tells the tale of a family of no-good hoodlum kids, the Herdmans, who only come to church because they hear that the congregation gets free refreshments. While at church, they hear about auditions for the annual Christmas pageant, and intimidate all the other church kids into letting the Herdmans get the lead roles. The parishioners are appalled that such low-life children would be chosen to play the Holy Family in the Christmas pageant, and they are certain that this year they will have the worst Christmas pageant ever. But as the Herdmans turn the pageant upside down in a series of hysterical miss-haps, they learn the true meaning of Christmas.

At times, we can see ourselves in the characters of this play. First, since it is a play about a church group putting on a play, it can almost be taken as a direct parallel to our lives as members of our own church community. Sometimes we are the Herdmans – the unkind out-casts who make poor decisions and take advantage of other people. Other times, we are the like the parishioners in the play who think we are too righteous to deal with such behavior. All learn valuable lessons in this play: lessons of acceptance, patience and perseverance, and lessons of kindness and selflessness.

Our vision for this play is not only to use its message to minister to our own community at St. George’s, but to minister to the surrounding communities of Colorado Springs. This play will not only give both adults and children the opportunity to delve into a story and learn about its Christian message, but they will have the opportunity to share that message as a ministry to others through their performance.

This ministry does not begin with rehearsals, it begins with auditions. Auditions are open to EVERYONE, not just members of St. George’s, but to all members of the community including young children to teens and adults. It begins with telling others about auditions for this play. Encourage your friends at school, work, scout groups, sports teams and your next-door neighbors to audition for this play. Our ministry will be for those in the play and those coming to see the play.  By their involvement with the play, it will not be surprising if we begin seeing them at other church social events and Sunday services.  This play is our big chance as a church community to build in numbers and build in friendship.
